New Year Granny Square

This granny square looks complicated but really isn't. I used some of the same techniques as I did for the Wild Granny Square.

Materials Needed:
Worsted Weight Yarn. Red Heart Was used. Red and White.
Size H aluminum crochet hook
Yarn Needle

Gauge: 4dc=1"
Yarn Thickness 4mm
Finished Size: =6" x 6"
Skill Level: Easy

Instructions
RND 1: With Red Ch4, join w/slst to first ch to form ring. Ch3, dc in ring. Ch3. *2dc in ring. Ch3. Rep from* 2 times more. Join w/slst to top of ch3. Fasten off red.

RND 2: Join white in same st as slst. Ch3. dc in next dc. (Tr, ch3, tr in beginning ring of rnd 1, behind ch3 sp.) *Dc in each of the next 2 dc. Rep bet (). Rep from * around. Join w/slst to top of ch3. Fasten off white.

RND 3: Join red in same st as slst. Ch3. Dc in next dc. Dc in next tr. [Dc in ch3 sp of rnd 2. (Tr, ch3, tr in ch3 sp of rnd 1 behind ch3sp of rnd 2.) Dc in ch3 sp of rnd 2.] *Dc in each of the next 4 sts. Rep bet [ ]. Rep from * around. Dc in last st. Join w/slst to top of ch3. Fasten off red.

RND 4: Join white in same st as slst. Ch3. Dc in each of the next 4 sts. [Dc in ch3 sp of rnd 3. (Tr, ch3, tr in ch3 sp of rnd 2 behind ch3sp of rnd 3.) Dc in ch3 sp of rnd 3.] *Dc in each of the next 8 sts. Rep bet [ ]. Rep from * around. Dc in each of the last 4 sts. Join w/slst to top of ch3. Fasten off white.

RND 5: Join red in same st as slst. Ch3. Dc in each of the next 6 sts. [Dc in ch3 sp of rnd 4. (Tr, ch3, tr in ch3 sp of rnd 3 behind ch3sp of rnd 4.) Dc in ch3 sp of rnd 4.] *Dc in each of the next 12 sts. Rep bet [ ]. Rep from * around. Dc in each of the last 7 sts. Join w/slst to top of ch3.

RND 6: Ch1, sc in same sp as joining. Sc in each of the next 7 sts. (Sc, ch2, sc in next ch3 corner sp. Sc in each of the next 8 sts.) *Sc in each of the next 8 sts. Rep bet () once. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to first sc. Fasten off red. Weave all ends into back of work.

This square can be done in all one color. Just do not fasten off. Just continue as the instructions are written. That is why I wrote it so you join the new color where you fasten off.

Glue Basting Quilt As You Go Blocks
Here is another way to baste a quilt block when making your quilt sandwiches. I have done this and it works very well! Instead of using spray or fusible batting, you can put dots of liquid Elmer's School glue where you would normally put your safety pins. I would actually put the dots closer together. Think of this, when we use spray basting or fusible batting, there is glue, why not just use the least expensive option. Little dots of Elmer's school glue. You cannot feel the dots when you are quilting and they do not interfere with the needle in the machine. Just use little dots. The action of pressing the glued layers together flattens the glue dots and as long as they are tiny, you will not feel them. Also, the Elmer's school glue will wash out of clothing even after it is set with an iron. Plus you don't have to worry about overspray or breathing in the glue into your lungs. I have also made a glue/water mixture and brushed it on with a sponge brush. That works well also.
