Cute Towel Topper
Designed By Julie A. BolducThis towel is topped with a hanger that is made then sewn on to a gathered unfinished edge of a towel which has been cut in half. You could make a whole bunch of the tops first then sew them to the cut edges of hand towels after you are done crocheting the tops. This would make a great bazaar item since they do not take that long to make.
Materials Needed
Small amount Red Heart Worsted weight acrylic yarn in Aran.
Size H or 8 aluminum crochet hook.
Sharp Yarn needle
Hand towel cut in half. Leave the cut edges unfinished.
Yarn Thickness: 4mm
Gauge: 4dc=1"
Finished Size: Overall length 15"
Skill Level: Beginner
Instructions
RND 1: Ch28, being careful not to twist chain, join w/slst to first ch to form ring. Ch1. Work 1 sc in each ch around. Join w/slst to first sc.
RND 2: Ch3. Dc in each sc around. Join w/slst to top of ch3.
RND 3: Ch1. Sc in each dc around. Join w/slst to ch1.
Now you will be working in rows.
ROW 1: Flatten the tube so that your next row will start on your right. Insert your hook into the inside loops of both the front and the back of your flattened tube. You will be closing the top of the tube. Sc in each st across to close the tube. You should end up with 14 sc across. Then Ch1, turn.
ROW 2: Sc in first sc. *Sk next sc. 2dc, ch2, 2dc in next sc. Sk next sc. sc in next sc. Rep from * 2 times more. Ch1, turn.
ROW 3: Sk the first sc. Slst into the first 2dc. Slst into the first ch2 sp. Sc in same sp. 2dc, ch2, 2dc in next sc. Sc in next ch2 sp. 2dc, ch2, 2dc in next sc. Sc in next ch2 sp. Ch1, turn.
ROW 4: Sk the first sc. Slst into the first 2 dc. Slst into the next ch2 sp. Ch3. Dc in same sp. 2dc, ch2, 2dc in next sc. 2dc in next ch2 sp. Ch3, turn.
ROW 5-10: Dc in next dc. 2dc, ch2, 2dc in next ch2 sp. Sk next 2dc. Dc in next dc and in top of ch3. Ch3, turn. At the end of row 10, ch1, turn.
ROW 11: Sc in each st across but work 3 sc in the ch2 sp. Fasten off and weave ends into work.
Now rejoin yarn in base of row 1 on right side. Work 2sc in each dc row all the way up the right side and work 1sc in each sc at the top. Then work 2sc in each dc row down the left side. Then join with a slst to the base of the topper. Ch1, turn.
ROW 12: Slst in each st around. Fasten off and weave ends into work.
Assembly
Gather the top cut edge of the towel with a piece of yarn threaded on your sharp yarn needle. Make your gathering stitches about .75" apart and .25" in from the edge. Gather up so that you have a 4" top edge. Sew the topper to the top covering the cut edges. Work your stitches back and forth tacking the topper to the top edge.
It is hard to explain exactly how I did this. But what I did was to insert the needle from one side and pulled it out of the other catching the bottom edge of the topper. Then repeat this going back and forth each time catching the bottom edge of the topper with each stitch you make. Sort of like a figure 8 pattern. Make each stitch fairly tight.
Sew button to 3rd row on front. Hang on towel rack.
