May Spring Angel

May Spring Angel Designed by Julie A. Bolduc

This little springtime angel has a scalloped set of wings and a snowflake halo. She holds a single baby blue rose to signify the coming of Spring.

Materials Needed:
White Southmaid crochet cotton
size 7 steel crochet hook
1 cotton ball.
Stiffen Stuff by Beacon or your favorite stiffening agent
tapestry needle

Yarn Thickness:10thread
Gauge: 8sc=1"
Finished Size: 4½" tall
Skill Level: Average for with some experience

How to decrease:
Insert hk in st, draw up a lp. Insert hk in next st, draw up a loop, yo draw thread through all3 lps on hk.

How to do a Vst.
(Dc, ch1, dc) in same st, lp or sp.

To make a bobble:
*Yo, insert hook in st, yo draw thread through two lps on hook, rep from * until there are 3 lps on hook then yo and draw thread through all three lps on hook.

Head:
RND 1: Ch2, wk 9 sc in 2nd ch from hk. Slst to first sc to join. Mark beg of each rnd with a scrap of colored thread.

RND 2: Ch1, wk 2 sc in each sc around. (18sc) Join w/slst to ch1.

RND 3-7: Ch1, sc in same st as slst and in each st around. Join w/slst to ch1.

RND 8: Ch1. Dec starting in the same st as sl st. *Sc in next st. Dec again. Rep from * around. Join with slst to first st.

Stuff head with cotton ball.

RND 9: Rep RND 8. 9 sc total.

RND 10: Ch1. Sc in same st as slst. Sc in each st around. Slst to ch1.

RND 11: Ch2. Wk 1 hdc in each sc around. Join w/slst to top of ch2.

Shoulders
RND 12: Ch3. 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc. (Dc, ch1. 4 times then dc.) in next dc. 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc. Rep bet() in next dc. Dc in dc. Join w/slst in top of ch 3.

RND 13: Ch3, dc in next st. Wk a vst in each of the next 5 dc. Dc in next 3 dc. Vst in each of the next 5 dc. Dc in next dc. Join w/slst to 3rd ch of ch 3.

RND 14: Ch3. dc in dc. Dc in first dc of the first vst. Sk next 4 vsts. Dc in last dc of the 5th vst. Dc in next 3 dc. Dc in 1st dc of next vst. Dc in dc. Slst to 3rd ch of ch3 skipping the last 4 vsts. You just started the torso section under the armpits. the stitches you skipped will be the openings where the arms will go through.

Skirt
RND 15: Ch3. Dc in same st as slst. *Dc in dc, 2dc in dc. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to top of ch3.

RND 16: Ch1. Wk 2sc in each st around. Join w/slst fo ch 1.

RND 17: Work in bk lp only. Ch2. dc in each st around. Join w/slst to top of ch2.

RND 18: Ch3. *Wk a bobble in next dc. Ch1, sk st. Vst in next dc. Sk 1 st. Rep from * around. End w/ a bobble in the last dc. Dc , ch1, in same st as slst w/starting ch. Sls t to top of this ch to join.

RND 19: Slst to the top of first bobble. Ch4, dc in same st. Vst made. Wk a bobble in each vst around and work a vst in every bobble around. Join w/slst in the 3rd ch of ch 4.

RND 20: Slst into ch1 sp. Ch3 & work a bobble in the same sp. *Vst in top of bobble. Bble in Vst. Rep from * around. Slst to top of ch3.

RND 21-24: Rep RND 19 & 20 2 times more.

RND 25: Ch1. * work the followng in the next Vst. (dc, ch1. 4 times. dc) Sc in top of bobble. Rep from *around. Slst to first ch 1. Fasten off Weave end into work.

Sleeves
Ch 26. Wk 2 dc in 3rd ch from hk, ch3, slst in sam ch as 2dc. Sc in each ch across tothe last 2 chs. 2dc in last ch. Ch3, sls st in last ch. Fasten off and leave ends long enough to weave them to the center of the arms to within ¼" of each other at the center and do not trim them. Put arms through the body and pull the threads through the back on either side of the starting ch in RND 13. Tie the threads and weave them into the back of the angel then trim them close to the angel.

Wings:
ROW 1: Ch5. Join w/slst to first ch to form ring. Slst into ring. Wk 5 sc in ring. Ch3, turn.

ROW 2: *Sc in sc, ch3. Rep from * across. Turn.

ROW 3&4:*Sc in ch3 lp. Ch3. Rep from *across. But ch4 in stead of ch3 at the end. Turn.

ROW 5: Sc in ch 3lp. *Ch4. Sc in ch3 lp. Rep from * across. Ch3 turn.

ROW 6: (Sc in first ch4 lp. Ch3, twice) *Sc in next lp. Ch4 rep from * across. Turn.

ROW 7: Sc in next lp. *Ch4. sc in next lp. Rep from* across. Ch1, turn.

ROW 8: Wk the fol 4 times. (In lp, (dc, ch1) 4times, dc. Sc in Sc) Wk the fol in next lp. (dc, ch1, twice. Dc.) sc in sc. Wk the fol in last lp. (dc ch1, 5 times, dc.) Sc in each row to the starting circle and rep rows 1-8 in the same way for the other side of the wings. Fasten off and Weave ends into work.

Halo:

RND 1: Ch4, join w/slst to 1st ch to form ring. Slst into ring. Work 12 sc in ring. Join w/slst to first sc.

RND 2: *Ch 5, sk a st, sc in next st. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to 1st ch of ch 5.

RND 3: Ch4, *dc in ch5 lp. Ch3, slst in 3rd ch from hk, dc in same ch5 lp. Ch 4 sc in next sc. Ch 4. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to 1st ch of ch 4. Fasten off and weave ends into work.

Assembly:
Stuff skirt with plastic wrap and work it into desired shape.
Lay the wings and halo on a flat surface that has been covered with clean plastic wrap or paper. Arrange if needed to get the desired shape. Spritz the Stiffen Stuff on the Skirt only of the angel, wings and the halo. Either allow to dry for 1 hour or heat on high for 30 seconds in the microwave. You may need to go through the process more than once to acheive the desired amount of stiffness. I spritzed them with two coats and heated them in the microwave two separate times.
