Rippled Shells Clutch

This Clutch is made at just the right size to hold a smart phone and a checkbook type wallet. It is just the thing to use when you want to make a quick trip to the grocery store and you don't want to carry your main purse or handbag. It has a fold over top with a button closure using a crocheted loop that is added at the very end.

Materials Needed

• 1oz Worsted Weight acrylic yarn in Black. Red Heart Super Saver Art E300, Color: 0312 Black was used.
• 1oz Worsted weight acrylic yarn in Grey Heather. Red Heart Super Saver, Art E300, Color: 0400 Grey Heather was used
• 1 Black or matching color button in type of choice, 1" in diameter. I used an old button I had in my stash.
• Size H/8 or 5.00mm crochet hook
• Yarn Needed for weaving in ends and another needle with an eye small enough to fit through the hole in your button and wide enough to fit your yarn through

Yarn Thickness: 4mm
Gauge: 4sc = 1"
Finished Size: 9.5" x 5.5"
Skill Level: Intermediate

Instructions
The first row is worked on the back hump of each stitch to give the inside top of the clutch a finished look. ROW 1: Ch32. Working on the back hump of each stitch for this row only, sc in each ch across. Ch1, turn.

ROW 2: Sc in first sc. *Sk 2 sc. 5dc in next sc. Sk 2 sc. Sc in next sc. Rep from * across ending with a sc in the last sc. Fasten off black. Turn.

The next 2 rows are the pattern rows you will be repeating several times.
Join grey to last sc of previous row.

ROW 3:Ch3, 2dc in same st. *Sk 2 dc. Sc in next dc. Sk 2 dc. 5dc in next sc. Rep from * 3 times more. Sk 2dc. Sc in next dc. Sk 2 dc. 3dc in last sc. Ch1, turn.

ROW 4: Sc in top of first dc. *Sk next 2 dc. 5dc in next sc. Sk 2 dc. Sc in next dc. Repeat from *across ending with a sc in top of ch3.

Fasten off Grey. Join black to last sc of previous row.

ROW 5 & 6: Repeat ROWs 3 & 4.

Fasten off Black. Join Grey to last sc of previous row.

ROW 7 & 8: Repeat ROWs 3 & 4.

Fasten off Grey. Join black to last sc of previous row.

ROW 9-14: Repeat ROWs 3 & 4 three times.

Fasten off black. Join grey to last sc of previous row.

ROW 15 & 16: Repeat ROWs 3 & 4.

Fasten off Grey. Join black to last sc of previous row.

ROW 17 & 18: Repeat ROWs 3 & 4.

Fasten off black. Join grey to last sc of previous row.

ROW 19 & 20: Repeat ROWs 3 & 4.

Fasten off grey. Join black to last sc of previous row.

ROW 21-26: Repeat ROWs 3 & 4 three times.

Fasten off black. Join grey to last sc of previous row.

ROW 27 & 28: Repeat ROWs 3 & 4. Fasten off, weave all ends in at this point.

Now you are done with the rows. Now you will work around 3 sides of the perimeter.

Perimeter
Lay the work in front of you so the back side of the last row is facing up and at the top and row 1 is at the bottom. Leaving a tail about 18&" long. Join black to row 1 at the very end opposite where the starting end was.

Work 38 sc evenly spaced up this right hand side. Work 2 sc in next corner stitch. Sc in each st across ROW 28. Work 2 sc in corner stitch. Work 38 sc evenly spaced down left side. Fasten off leaving a tail at least 18" long. The tails you left are for whip stitching the sides together.

Assembly:
Fold up the bottom row, up so you are folding at the center of the first set of 6 rows of black. Use safety pins or crochet stitch holders to hold the corners to the edges where you will start whip stitching in order to keep it lined up where you want it. Whip stitch each side closed working with the right side out. To weave these ends in, turn your work inside out and weave them in at the bottom folded corners. Turn it right side out again before continuing onto the next step.

Button & Loop:
Lay your clutch in front of you so it is closed and the flap is down over the front and at the top. Now open the flap up. Join yarn to center shell, the stitch just to the right of the center stitch. Ch6. Sk next stitch. Slst to the next stitch. Turn work. Work 10 sc in the ch6 loop just made but do not join the first stitch to the last stitch. Instead, join w/slst to the sc you joined the black to. Fasten off and weave both ends into back of work to secure the button loop in place.

Fold down your flap and see where the loop falls. This is where you are going to sew your button to on the bottom front side of your clutch. What I did, since the hole in the shank was small, I was only able to fit one strand of my yarn through the loop so I inserted my needle from inside the clutch, ran the yarn through the hole in the shank, then poked it through a close stitch in the clutch. I then removed the needle and evened out the lengths of my yarn and tied a square knot. Then one by one, I threaded the end on the needle again and wove the neds into the back of my work making the button more secure.
