Shell Stitch Filet Bookmark
Designed By Julie A. BolducThis is the very first bookmark I designed for the JPF Crochet Club web site. It starts off as a basic filet crochet strip then shells are worked around the perimeter.
Materials Needed
Small amount pink South Maid Crochet Cotton. Size 10.
Size 7 Steel crochet hook.
Tapestry Needle for weaving in ends
Yarn Thickness: 10thread
Gauge: 8sc =1"
Finished Size: 6" x 1"
Skill Level: Beginner to intermediate
This bookmark is made with filet crochet and a variation on the standard shell stitch. The special abbreviation used in this pattern is (end sp) meaning End Space. This is explained in the pattern itself.
Instructions
ROW 1: (Foundation Row)Ch 13, sc each ch across. Ch 3, turn.
ROW 2: Dc in next sc. * ch 2, sk 2 sts, dc in next st. Repeat from * 2 more times. Dc in last st. Rep from * 2 more times. Dc in last st. What you have now is a row that has 2 dc on each side and 2 dc in the middle separated by 2 sts. Ch 3, turn.
Row 3-25: (This is the Pattern Row) Dc in top of dc. * ch 2, dc in dc. rep from * 2 times more. Dc bet last dc & ch 3. Ch 3, turn.
ROW 26: Sk first dc. Dc in dc, ch 2, dc in dc, ch 3, sc bet last dc & ch 3. Do not turn. What you have now is 3 spaces that will be worked on at the very end.
Outer Edge
Now you will work the outer edge of the bookmark with a variation on the standard shell stitch.
Work on only the very outer edges where you chained 3 and worked the last dc in each row. Refer to these as End Spaces (end sp).
6 dc shell st.
Work 6 dc in sp. This is the shell stitch used.
*Work a shell in the next end sp. Sc in next end sp. Rep from * across to the last end sp where you will end with a shell st in the last sp.
You should now be at the very first sc of Row 1. Work across the bottom of this row with the following.
Sc in the first st. Ch 6, sl st in 6th ch from hk. Sc in same st as sc. Sk 2 sts. Work 5 dc in next st, ch 4, sl st in 4th ch from hk. Work 5 dc in next st. Sk next 2 sts. Sc in last st, ch 6, sl st in 6th ch from hk, sc in same st as sc.
Work a shell in the first end sp. * Sc in next end sp. Shell in the next end sp. Rep from * across to the other end. End with a sc in last end sp.
Work a 7 dc shell in ch 3 sp. Work the following into the ch 2 sp.
(2 dc, 2 trb, 2 dc)
Work 7 dc shell in the last ch 3 sp. sl st to first sc in outer edge. Fasten off and weave ends of the thread into back of bookmark.
