This coaster starts off as a granny square and could be used as such by leaving off round 4. It would then be a very small square. You could make this coaster with worsted weight cotton yarn as well.

Materials Needed
Worsted weight acrylic yarn in blue. I used scraps.
Worsted weight acrylic yarn in rose. I used scraps.
Size H/8 or 5mm aluminum crochet hook
Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Yarn Thickness: 4mm
Gauge: 4dc = 1"
Finished Size: 4½"x4½"
Skill Level: Beginner

Instructions
RND 1: With blue. Ch6. Join w/slst to first ch to form ring. *Sc in ring. Ch2. 2dc in ring. Ch2. Rep from * 3 times more. Join w/slst to first sc. Fasten off blue.

RND 2: Join rose in next ch2 sp after joining last round. Ch3. (Dc in each of the next 2 dc. ch2. Sc in next ch 2 sp.) *Ch2. Rep bet () once. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to first ch of ch3. Fasten off rose.

RND 3: Join blue in first ch3 sp. Ch3, 2dc, ch2, 3dc in same sp. (Sc in next ch2 sp. Ch3. Sc in next ch2 sp.) *3dc, ch2, 3dc in next ch3 sp. Rep bet () once. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to top of ch3. Fasten off blue.

RND 4: Join rose in same st as slst. Ch1. Sc in each of the next 2 dc. (2sc, ch2, 2sc in next ch2 corner sp. Sc in each of the next 3 dc. Sc in next sc. Sc, ch2, 2dc, ch2, sc in next ch3 sp. Sc in next sc.) *Sc in each of the next 3 dc. Rep bet () once. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to ch1.

Random Quick Tip!

Make it Stiff
For stiffening stuff. I just bought this wonderful stuff from Wal-Mart called Stiffen Stuff. It works great and you can control how stiff you want something by adding more coats of it as needed. It comes in a pump spray bottle and you can get 32 oz refill bottles for the pump bottle. You can even dry it in the microwave. There is a website you can go to to learn more about it. http
//www.beacon1.com I used it for the skirt of the angel and it holds up very well. I used only two applications and it is able to hold it's shape but does have some give to it. You cannot even tell that there is stiffener in it. I really love the stuff. For something a basket though, you may want to keep adding coats of it until it is as stiff as you want it.
