Stratton Square

This is the first square in a series of motifs named after towns in Maine. It is also the first square I designed for the site.
Materials Needed
Red Heart Worsted Weight acrylic yarn in 3 colors
Red White Blue
Size H aluminum crochet hook.
Yarn Needle
Gauge: 4dc=1"
Yarn Thickness: 4mm
Finished Size: 6"x6"

Instructions
With Blue
RND 1:Ch 6, join w/slst to first ch to form ring. Ch1, wk 12 sc in ring. Join w/slst in
first sc.
RND 2: Ch3, wk 2dc in same st as slst. *Ch3, sk 2 sc, 3dc in next sc. rep from* 2 times more. Ch3, join w/slst to top of ch3. Fasten off blue.
RND 3: With white. Attach thread in any ch 3sp. Ch3. Wk 2dc, ch2, 3dc in same ch3 sp. *Ch3, sc in 2nd dc of the 3dc group in rnd 2. Ch3, wk the fol in the next ch3 sp (3dc, ch2, 3dc). Rep from * 2 times more. Ch3, sc in 2nd dc in last 3dc group in rnd 2. Ch 3. Slst to top of ch3.
RND 4: *(1 sc in each of the next 3 dc) and in the ch2 sp. Ch6, sc in same sp. Repeat bet() once. Ch4. Rep from * 3 times more. Join w/slst in first sc.Fasten off white.
RND 5: Attach red to any ch 4 lp. Ch3, wk the fol into this same ch4 lp. (3dc, ch1, 4dc)"8 dc shell made" Ch2. * wk an 8dcshl into next ch6 lp. Ch2. wk an 8dcshl in next ch4 lp. Ch2. Wk from * around ending with a ch 2 after an 8dcshl in a ch6 lp. Join w/slst to top of ch3. Fasten off. Weave all ends into work.
Special Stitch note and Abbreviation: To make an 8dc shell "8dcshl" work the fol. 4dc, ch2, 4dc in same lp or sp. Suggested Uses: This motif could easily be used as an exchange square by switching to worsted weight yarn and a size H aluminum crochet hook.
