Irish Square

This square started out with a clover in mind but it did not quite work out that way. Instead I have what looks more like an Irish cross. But try to imagine it as a clover.

    Materials Needed:
  • Small amounts each white and kelly green worsed weight yarn. White Red Heart and Green Pop-n-Yarn were used.
  • Size H-8 5mm aluminum crochet hook.
  • Yarn needle

  • Gauge: 4sc=1"
  • Yarn Thickness: 4mm
  • Finished Size: 6" x 6"
  • Skill Level: Intermediate

Instructions RND 1: With green: Ch4, join w/slst to first ch to form ring. Ch2, work 11 hdc in ring. Join w/slst to top of ch2.

RND 2: Ch6, sc in next st. Dc, ch2, dc in next st. *Sc in next st. Ch6. Sc in next st. Dc, ch2, dc in next st. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to first ch of ch6. Fasten off green.

RND3: Join white yarn in ch2 sp. Ch3, 2dc, ch2, 3dc in same ch2 sp. (Ch1. Now here I go crazy again. Work 2 dc in each of the same hdc that you put a sc in on the prev rnd behind the ch6 lp. Ch1.) 3dc, ch2, 3dc in next ch2 sp. Rep bet (). Rep from * around. Join w/slst to top of ch3.

RND 4: Slst to the first ch2 sp. Ch3, 2dc, ch2, 3dc in same ch2 sp. (Ch1. Dc in next ch1 sp and in each of the next 4 dc and in next ch1 sp. Ch1.) *3dc, ch2, 3dc in next ch2 sp. Rep bet (). Rep from * around. Join w/slst to top of ch3.

RND 5: Slst to the first ch2 sp. Ch3, 2dc, ch2, 3dc in same ch2 sp. (Ch1. Dc in next ch1 sp and in each of the next 6 dc and in next ch1 sp. Ch1.) *3dc, ch2, 3dc in next ch2 sp. Rep bet (). Rep from * around. Join w/slst to top of ch3.

RND 6: Slst to the first ch2 sp. Ch3, 2dc, ch2, 3dc in same ch2 sp. (Ch1. Dc in next ch1 sp and in each of the next 8 dc and in next ch1 sp. Ch1.) *3dc, ch2, 3dc in next ch2 sp. Rep bet (). Rep from * around. Join w/slst to top of ch3. Fasten off white.

RND 7: Join green yarn in same st as slst. Sc in each of the next 2 sts. *2sc, ch2, 2sc in ch2 sp. Sc in each of the next 3 dc. Sc in next ch1 sp. Sc in each of the next 10dc. Sc in next ch1 sp. Sc in each of the next 3 dc. Rep from * around ending with a slst in the ch1. Fasten off and weave all ends into back of work.

Four Leaf Clover On Front. Work in the 4 ch lps. Work the following in each one. Sc, 3hdc, 3dc, 2tr, 3dc, 3hdc, sc. Then ch2 between each petal. Fasten off and weave all ends into work.

If you need a plastic template for a sewing project and you plan to use it over and over again, you can get some of those flexible plastic cutting boards from a Dollar Store and make your templates from that. The plastic is easy to cut and the template will last for years!
