Beads and Shells Pencil Cup
Designed By Julie A. BolducThis pencil cup has 540 beads in it done in 2 sections of 270 beads separated by a few rounds of shells done in white. It is fairly fun to make and the result is worth the time it takes.
Materials Needed
Size 10 crochet cotton in black
Size 10 crochet cotton in white
540 E-beads or 4mm pearls in 5 different colors - 108 each
Size 7 steel crochet hook
Tapestry needle fine enough to fit through the holes of the beads
Empty clean 15oz veggie can
Yarn Thickness: 10thread
Gauge: 11sc=1"
Finished Size: Fits a 15oz can 3" x 4 5/8"
Skill Level: Intermediate
Special Stitch: Beaded Sc To do a beaded sc. Insert hook in next stitch indicated, yo, pull up a loop, pull up a bead, yo, pull through both loops on hook, locking the bead in the back side of the stitch.
InstructionsString on 270 beads in the order of your choice.RND 1: With black. Ch4, join w/slst to first ch to form ring. Ch3, 14dc in ring. Join w/slst to top of ch3. (15dc)
RND 2: Ch3, dc in same st as slst. 2dc in each dc around. Join w/slst to top of ch3. (30dc.)
RND 3: Ch3, dc in same st as slst. Dc in next dc. *2dc in next dc. Dc in next dc. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to top of ch3. (45dc)
RND 4: Ch3, dc in same st as slst. Dc in each of the next 2 dc. *2dc in next dc. Dc in each of the next 2 dc. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to top of ch3. (60dc)
RND 5: Ch3, dc in same st as slst. Dc in each of the next 3 dc. *2dc in next dc. Dc in each of the next 3 dc. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to top of ch3. (75dc)
RND 6: Ch3, dc in same st as slst. Dc in each of the next 4 dc. *2dc in next dc. Dc in each of the next 4 dc. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to top of ch3. (90dc)
RND 7: Work on front loops only for this round only. Ch1. Beaded sc in same st a slst. Sc in next st. *Beaded sc in next st. Sc in next st. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to first sc.
RND 8: Ch3. Dc in same st as slst. Dc in each st around. Join w/slst to top of ch3.
RND 9: Ch1. Beaded sc in same st a slst. Sc in next st. *Beaded sc in next st. Sc in next st. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to first sc.
RND 10-17: Rep RNDs 8& 9 consecutively. Fasten off black at the end of round 17.
Join white to same st as slst. Turn work so you are working the opposite way of the black thread. This will end up being the outside of the pencil cup.
RND 18: Ch1, sc in same st as slst. Sc in each st around. Join w/slst to first sc. (90 sc.)
RND 19: Ch1, sc in same st as slst. (Sk 2 sc. 5dc in next sc. Sk 2 sc.) *Sc in next sc. Rep bet () once. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to first sc.
RND 20: Ch3, 4dc in same st as slst. Sc 2dc. Sc in next dc. Sk 2 dc. *5dc in next sc. Sk 2 dc. Sc in next dc. Sk 2 dc. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to top of ch3.
RND 21: Slst in each of the next 2dc. Sc in same dc as last slst. Sk 2 dc. 5dc in next sc. Sk 2 dc. *Sc in next dc. Sk 2 dc. 5dc in next sc. Sk 2 dc. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to first sc.

RND 23: Rep RND 20.
RND 24: Ch2. Sc in each of the next 3dc. Hdc in next dc. Dc in next sc. *Hdc in next dc. Sc in each of the next 3 dc. Hdc in next dc. Dc in next sc. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to top of ch2. Fasten off white.
Turn work around and join black to same st as slst.RND 25: Ch1. Beaded sc in same st a slst. Sc in next st. *Beaded sc in next st. Sc in next st. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to first sc.
RND 26-35: Rep RNDs 8-17.
RND 36:Turn work around one more time. Ch1, sc in each st around. Join w/slst to first sc. Fasten off and weave all ends into back of work. Slip work over can
You can glue it in place if you like. I didn't because I would like to be able to clean the can once in awhile.NOTE: The beaded rows on the top and bottom are done the same way. When you get to the white section, you will work in the opposite way. When you are working on the beaded rows, the beads will be on the back side of your work which will be the outside when you are done with the pencil cup.
